Western has a tremendous array of athletic teams to take part in. All Western teams compete in the Calgary Senior High School Athletics Association Calgary High School Sports (CSHSAA) and are also governed by the Alberta Schools Athletics Association (ASAA).
Some sports are tryout based and some are for anyone interested. Many of the team sports offer Junior (Grade 10 and 11) and Senior (Grade 10, 11 and 12) teams. This varies from year to year.
Annual Authorization for Athletic Tryout:
If your child plans on trying out for sports, they will provide one form per team (it is very challenging for our coaches to share and track one form among every sport your child would like to try out for; thank you for your understanding)
If you intend to tryout out for one of our schools teams, please fill out and return the
Annual Athletic Authorization Form.

Cross Country Team 2026 Information
Coaches Affleck, Ozero, and Freeman are excited to start running with you right away in September! We will have a meeting for all interested runners on the second day of school, Tuesday, September 1st, at lunch and after school in the Art room 088. We want to inspire everyone interested to pick up running as a mental health strategy as well as an awesome sport with great people and sometimes excellent weather. Western has always had a huge team of runners, and it is a great way to get fit and make friends with our outstanding team!
Important Dates:
- Initial Student XC Information Meeting: Tuesday, September 1st, lunch or after-school tutorial in room 088 Art room.
- First Practice: Thursday, September 3rd
You do not have to be a speedy runner to join the team. We welcome people of all abilities, from the never-ever-run to the elite athlete. We practice regularly after school in different pace & distance groups. Many athletes balance two fall sports with the XC team; you don’t have to come every day, but we encourage runners to come to at least two practices per week. More information will be shared at the information meeting. See you in September.
Go Redhawks!
Mr. Freeman,
Head Coach

General Information
Tryouts
Tryout and team information will be given in the weeks leading up to the start date of each sport. For fall sports, tryout information will be given on the first day of school. This information is typically spread through in-school posters and through meetings. Meeting times will be communicated through morning announcements. Students are expected to get an annual authorization signed by their parents and handed into the coach before they are allowed to try out.
Fees
Each team will have fees associated with them. These fees will vary from team to team. Most team fees will cover the expenses of league play (referees, facility bookings), uniform rentals, photos, equipment, training supplies, and substitute coverage costs for teachers. Higher fees are typically indicative of more out-of-town tournaments, team clothing, and other team-specific opportunities. Friends of Western generously subsidizes team fees from year to year.
Practice and Game Schedules
Most teams are active before and/or after school, 4-5 days per week. It is a heavy but rewarding experience. Generally speaking, there will be 2-4 practices a week, 1-2 games a week, and tournaments on some weekends depending on the sport. Tryout, practice, and tournament schedules will be communicated at the beginning of the season, and all game schedules for all sports are posted at Calgary High School Sports at the beginning of each season. Students should expect to travel on their own to off-site league games for most teams, but will generally travel as a team on a school bus to out-of-town tournaments.
