Western has a tremendous array of athletic teams to take part in. All Western teams compete in the Calgary Senior High School Athletics Association Calgary High School Sports (CSHSAA) and are also governed by the Alberta Schools Athletics Association (ASAA).
Some sports are tryout based and some are for anyone interested. Many of the team sports offer Junior (Grade 10 and 11) and Senior (Grade 10, 11 and 12) teams. This varies from year to year.
Annual Authorization for Athletic Tryout:
If your child plans on trying out for sports, they will provide one form per team (it is very challenging for our coaches to share and track one form among every sport your child would like to try out for; thank you for your understanding)
If you intend to tryout out for one of our schools teams, please fill out and return the
Annual Athletic Authorization Form.
Fall Athletics Teams
Welcome to our incoming grade 10 students! For those interested in joining fall sports teams, tryouts will take place in August 2025, before the school year begins.
Information for sports with scheduled tryout dates is provided below. We encourage all interested students to take part—we’re looking forward to a great season!
Questions should be directed to the coach(es) of the team you plan to try out for.

Cross Country Team 2024
Coaches Barbet and Freeman are excited to start running with you right away in September! We will have a meeting for all interested runners on Wednesday, September 3rd, at lunch in Rm 088 (Ms. Affleck's Art Room).
We want to inspire everyone interested to pick up running as a mental health strategy as well as an awesome sport with great people and sometimes excellent weather. Western has always had a huge team of runners, and it is a great way to get fit and make friends. The longest distance is 6 km for senior boys, and the shortest race distance is 4 km for junior runners. EVERYONE on the team earns points for the school at cities, so we want every interested runner, from the never-ever run to the elite athlete. Mark your calendar, since the season starts Tuesday, September 3rd.
Our tentative XC meet schedule will be posted at a later date.
You do not have to be a speedy runner to join the team. We welcome all abilities and encourage everyone to come out and discover the joy of running with our outstanding team! Coach Barbet (adbarbet@cbe.ab.ca) and Coach Freeman (drgfreeman@cbe.ab.ca)
Golf
Are you a regular golfer wanting to compete on behalf of Western? Please attend an information meeting at 12pm on Wednesday, September 4th in Room 001 with Ms. Dixon. Our tournament is on Sept. 17th, so this team is for students already playing golf regularly and who know, or can determine their golf handicap.
Swim and Dive
We will have our first meeting at lunch on Wednesday, September 18th in room 74
Coaches are:
The season begins: Monday October 7th
The season ends: Dec 3 or 4th (TBD)
General Information
Tryouts
Tryout and team information will be given in the weeks leading up to the start date of each sport. For fall sports, tryout information will be given on the first day of school. This information is typically spread through in-school posters and through meetings. Meeting times will be communicated through morning announcements. Students are expected to get an annual authorization signed by their parents and handed into the coach before they are allowed to try out.
Fees
Each team will have fees associated with them. These fees will vary from team to team. Most team fees will cover the expenses of league play (referees, facility bookings), uniform rentals, photos, equipment, training supplies, and substitute coverage costs for teachers. Higher fees are typically indicative of more out-of-town tournaments, team clothing, and other team-specific opportunities. Friends of Western generously subsidizes team fees from year to year.
Practice and Game Schedules
Most teams are active before and/or after school, 4-5 days per week. It is a heavy but rewarding experience. Generally speaking, there will be 2-4 practices a week, 1-2 games a week, and tournaments on some weekends depending on the sport. Tryout, practice, and tournament schedules will be communicated at the beginning of the season, and all game schedules for all sports are posted at Calgary High School Sports at the beginning of each season. Students should expect to travel on their own to off-site league games for most teams, but will generally travel as a team on a school bus to out-of-town tournaments.
