Weekly Update Header

School Message

Good afternoon to our Western families,

As we come to the end of our first semester exams, we look forward to the second semester starting on Tuesday, January 28th. Students should look at PowerSchool to see their course information and head to the appropriate rooms using a typical Tuesday schedule. Teachers will be in the halls to help direct them where to go.

Please note that our guidance counselors and assistant principals are still making some enrollment changes over these last few days before the semester begins. We have reassigned some staff to different courses, are adjusting student numbers based on individual room sizes, and are ensuring that we also adhere to logistics around fire code regulations for our second and third floors. We ask for your understanding as we make these necessary changes over the coming days.

Thank you,

Darrin Whitbread, Principal | Western Canada High School

Upcoming Dates:

  • Semester 1 Report Cards Visible on PowerSchool
    • Monday, January 27th
  • First Day of Semester 2 Classes
    • Tuesday, January 28th

Updates

April Diplomas

Any student wishing to rewrite a diploma - or who has deferred a previous diploma - has an opportunity to write in any diploma writing session.  We have two such sessions remaining at Western this school year: April and June.  If students wish to rewrite a diploma or write one that they have deferred in April, the deadline for students to register is February 17th.  They should let Mr. Wiebe know their intent by email before February 3rd  - this allows Mr. Wiebe to meet with the student and guide them through the registration process and any pertinent information before the 17th.  Please contact Mr. Wiebe by email if you need more information.

Attendance

To report your child’s absence, please call 403-228-5363, option 1 or email westerncanada@cbe.ab.ca

When providing an update, please include:

  • The student’s full name (spell the last name slowly and clearly if leaving a voicemail).
  • The reason for the absence.
  • The timeframe of the absence.

Please note: Attendance updates may take longer during bus delays, winter weather, or other events affecting attendance, as the school manages records for approximately 2,250 students. Updates may take up to one school day.

To avoid delays, please do not leave multiple messages unless correcting a previous one. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

2nd Semester Peer Tutors and Tutees

Please fill out the Google Form if you are interested in taking part in semester 2 (or wish to continue with your semester 1 arrangement).

Grade 10 IB Mentors for Grade 9’s

If you are in Grade 10 partial or full IB and willing to be an email contact for a Grade 9 student who may have questions about the IB programme, please fill out the following form. Thanks!

Badminton

All students interested in trying out for the Western badminton team are invited to the Badminton Interest Meeting on Thursday, January 30th at 12:00 pm in the aux gym. Tryouts will begin on February 3rd.  The annual authorization for athletic tryout form is available here. See Mrs. Peciulis if you have questions.

Report Card Credits for Pending Diploma Courses

Students and families are reminded that credits are not awarded for 30 level diploma courses until Alberta Education has updated diploma exam marks and the student has officially completed the course. On the semester 1 report card, students and families can expect to see a dash (“-”) instead of a quantity of credits awarded at this time for 30 level diploma courses.

Valedictorian/Gad Speaker Applications

Graduating grade 12 students who are interested in speaking at the banquet or the ceremony are encouraged to pick up an application package from the main office. Applications are due back to the main office by February 7th.
