School Message
Hello to our Western families,
Though later in the year than normal, our grade 10 students received their WCHS 2027 scarves today, symbolizing the year they will be graduating. We certainly encourage students to wear these out and about, recognizing that the warmer weather of the spring is not necessarily the right timing for that. Having said that, there will be plenty of other/cooler opportunities to come over the next couple of years during their time with us and we look forward to students continuing to represent WCHS in the school, at events, and out in the community. As 700+ of these were handed out, a reminder that one is going to look like another if they happen to be left on a desk or a table in the cafeteria, for instance, so they should probably go home sooner than later.
If your child wasn’t at the school during the fall of their grade 10 year, we do have some left-over scarves available for 2025 and 2026. And if they were here, but have since lost the scarf they originally received, we do have very limited quantities that can still be purchased via the Business Office.
Finally, a reminder to take note of your child’s final exam dates for June so that nothing is missed to finish the school year. Before we get there, though, we are looking forward to our graduation, which is now just four weeks away. There is a noticeable excitement starting to bubble from our grade 12’s.
Thank you,
Darrin Whitbread, Principal | Western Canada High School

Diploma Breakfast “Grab and GO!”
This June, we have some amazing parents/alumni who are looking to make a difference in our school. To that end, they are hoping to provide “Grab and Go” breakfast/snacks before exams this June to help fuel our students to success! They are looking for some help with this venture, and that help can come in the form of morning volunteers, donated food items, or cash donations. For more information on how you can help or get involved, please reach out to Bridgette Moore at b.f.moore@shaw.ca
Western Canada Alumni Bursary!!
This is a $3000.00 award given to 5 students who have displayed community leadership at Western Canada High school and require financial assistance to attend post secondary school. French Immersion Certificate of Achievement Application Forms
Grade 12 students in French Immersion will be given an application form package by one of their French Immersion teachers (FLA, MATH, SS) that will include a list of instructions as all well as the application form that must be filled out and submitted to the teacher who handed it to them by April 30th. The process includes downloading a copy of their DAR document, highlighting the completed courses, indicating the number of credits and giving their overall average over nine courses. French Challenge exams do not count for this purpose.
Independent Student Status and Information Sharing/MyCBE
As per the Alberta Education Act, a student is considered independent if they are 18 years of age or older, or at least 16 and either living independently (as determined by the school board) or a party to an agreement under section 57.2 of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act.
Independent students have the right to make decisions regarding their education and personal information. If they wish to allow their parent or guardian access to information (such as report cards, attendance, course selections, fees, or disciplinary matters), the student must complete the Releasing Independent Student Information from The Calgary Board of Education to Others form, which may be obtained in the Main Office.
Please note: Not completing the Independent Student form or creating an Independent Student MyCBE account may impact the student's ability to pay school fees (including graduation related fees) and access their final report card. These steps are essential for continued access to all MyCBE account functions.
