Weekly Update Header

School Message

Hello to our Western families,

This is a late shout-out, but we want to acknowledge the success of our school and students at the Calgary Youth Science Fair last month. This event has been going on since 1962, and has been held at the Olympic Oval for many years. It typically has about 700 projects, put together by about 1000 grade 5 - 12 students from 100 schools in/around Calgary. While students receive some support at the school level, the vast majority of their success comes from their own imaginations/effort/dedication, which also deserves some recognition. A number of students submitted impressive entries, which they'd been working on since October (if not longer). While all did well, official congratulations are due to Evrett, Lillian, and Marlea for the six awards that they won for their respective projects. Western also won the Aggregate Score award, with our collective projects garnering the most points amongst all high schools. Thank you to all those who participated for representing our school well.

And now for something completely different, another reminder to check the June Exam schedule. There is an update for Math 20-2.

Thank you,

Darrin Whitbread
Principal | Western Canada High School

ABC Challenge. The Anything But a Car Challenge was a great success last week (Apr 28 – May 2)!! With over 12% participation, Western won a bike stand for being the top participating high school. The challenge continues, as travel to school by Anything But a Car is a great way to save the environment and stay in good mental and physical health. A new club will be born from the momentum of the ABC Challenge: the Wheels of Western Bike Club. Stay tuned for more on this in the weeks to come!

WCHS CANSTRUCTION - May 14th

The annual student CANstruction is approaching! Help us support the Calgary Food Bank on May 14th by creating the best structure out of cans of food!

We challenge students to form teams and collect cans of food (+ other non-perishable food items), while enjoying the afternoon with a fun team bonding activity. All the cans will be donated to the Calgary Food Bank, but first,, teams will use the cans they brought in to assemble a sculpture full of creativity and epicness! Each team's structure will be photographed and reviewed, with judges determining which of them is the most impressive and stunning. The top three winning teams will receive a prize, but more importantly, you will be equipped with the knowledge that you have helped your community deal with the scourge of food insecurity. Will you contribute and perhaps win the contest? Yes, you CAN! 🥫🥫🥫

Form a team with your friends and sign up today, then come play with your food! (Registration Form/Sign-Up).
