Update on Lottery and Overflow Designation for Western Canada High School

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

We would like to update you on our last communication regarding the possibility of a lottery for incoming Grade 10 students and the overflow remaining in place for Western Canada High School.

As of the date of this notice, the number of registrations for Grade 10 for the 2024-25 school year is at a number that we believe we will not need to run a lottery for the incoming Grade 10 students. Given we are now two weeks from the CBE lottery date of Feb. 14, 2024, we felt it important to confirm this update with you. This means that all regular program CBE students who are currently in Grade 9 and designated to Western Canada High School and any registrations currently in SchoolEngage for the 2024-25 school year will see their registration accepted.

However, the overflow for new Grade 10 to 12 regular program student registrations will remain in place until it is no longer needed. The overflow is necessary due to the current capacity constraints at the school and the projected population growth for Western Canada High School’s designated communities. We project there will be new registrations for Western Canada High School for the 2024-25 school year from students new to the CBE over the course of this and next school year. As such we must keep the overflow to Crescent Heights High School in place to ensure the learning environment is not adversely impacted.

No Changes for Current Students at Western Canada High School

Current students designated to Western Canada High School will remain at the school for the 2023-24 school year and beyond, provided they do not move out of the school boundary.

No Changes for Current Students Overflowed to Crescent Heights High School

Current students that have been overflowed to Crescent Heights High School for the 2023-24 school year and beyond will remain at the school due to the capacity constraints at Western Canada High School this school year and projected for Grades 11 and 12 for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.

Regular program students who are overflowed to Crescent Heights High School will remain on a call-back list. If space becomes available, they will be given an opportunity to transfer back to Western Canada High School.

We are continuing to work on solutions for the capacity issues at Western Canada High School and will continue to provide updates to impacted students and parents/guardians.
