Updates for This Week

This coming week, we will be completing term 1 courses and starting term 2. Report cards will be available for viewing mid-November. We are also starting our fall diploma exams (see schedule above). This past week we had a great turn out for our Out of Province Post-Secondary Fair. This coming Tuesday morning, we will have a similar fair for In-Province Post-Secondary, this time for students only, in the cafeteria starting at 9am.

Congratulations

A big congratulations to both our Junior and Senior Girl’s Volleyball players for their wins against Aberhart, and Robert Thirsk this week. Also, congratulations to the Boy’s teams for their wins against Notre Dame and Ernest Manning. Go Redhawks!

French Immersion and Second Languages Events and Updates

Extraordinary Assemblies

The Faculté St-Jean, French campus of the University of Alberta, is looking to establish a partnership with the CBE and with our school.  In view of the increased fees for attending university in Quebec as a student from outside that province (from $9,000 to $17,000 per year), this opportunity allows them to take a few classes in French at "home" and gain acceptance to a wide variety of faculties at the U of A.  The advantages are many.

To that end, the dean of the faculty, Jason Carey (PhD, PEng) will be the guest speaker to share his vision and the opportunities available to French Immersion students at two special assemblies to be held in periods 3 and 4 on Friday, November 3rd.

Thank you to Ms. Caitlin Gallichan-Lowe and the students from her drama classes for graciously giving up the theatre for these assemblies.

All French Immersion grade 12s will attend the assembly during period 3

All French Immersion grade 11s will attend the assembly during period 4.

French Immersion Field experience to France

This week, grade 10 and 11 students in French Immersion will be receiving a document entitled “Indication of Interest” for a field experience to France which would take place in October of 2024.

Priority will be given to current grade 10 students (grade 11 next year), but grade 12 students could be included if there aren’t 36 grade 11 students interested.

Students will be selected on a first come, first served basis.  A record will be kept in terms of the order in which the indication of interest form is turned in.  All interested students who turn in the interest form will be added to the waiting list should the numbers exceed 36.

The deadline for turning in the “Indication of interest” form is November 8th.

French Immersion D2L shell

We have created a new D2L shell called WCHS French Immersion 2023-2024 where information related to announcements and programs being offered will be available for all our French Immersion students from grades 10, 11 and 12.  Students have already been included in the shell.

Information for FRENCH 10-9Y (for students studying FLA10 this semester) and FRENCH 20-9Y (for students currently enrolled in FLA20) will be posted in mid-November.

Information for FR10 and FR20 challenges for students taking FLA in semester 2 will be published in March of 2024.

Spanish Field Experience to Spain

Congratulations to Srta. Silvia Cebrecos-Sebastian and her accompanying teacher Mme Ghira ,and Assistant Principal Mr. Wiebe for a successful Field Experience to Spain.

From October 14th to the 25th, they visited among other things, the Royal Palace, the Prada Museum, Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium.  They visited Toledo on their way to Mérida for the Roman ruins and theatre and bullfighting history and arena in Sevilla.  Flamenco lessons and a show were included in Málaga, an orienteering experience with students in Ronda, paella at the beach city of Nerja on their way to La Alhambra in Granada, an olive oil production site in Jaen, the windmills of La Mancha and back to Madrid.  Those are only some of the highlights.

This field experience has been offered every two years at Western since 2015 (2017 and 2019).  We are pleased to continue the tradition post COVID travel restrictions.

If your child is currently studying Spanish in grade 10, this opportunity may be something to consider in October of their grade 10 year.  Although there were only 26 students who participated this year, previous groups have had between 39 and 41 student participants.
